    Description

Apollo 11: Buzz Aldrin Signed Communion Chalice Replica with Photographic Provenance and Certificate of Authenticity along with a Large Lunar Flag Photo Signed by Aldrin, in Framed Display. A 2.75" tall replica of the silver chalice that Aldrin took to the moon mounted on top of a 3.75" x 2.375" square crystal base signed in black felt tip and bearing a plaque that reads: "A Replica of the Chalice used by Buzz Aldrin in Celebrating Holy Communion on the Moon. Apollo 11 Tranquility base July 20, 1969". Included with the lot is a Certificate that explains the background:

"This is a replica of the silver communion chalice carried to the surface of the Moon by Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin on board lunar module Eagle during the first lunar landing July 20, 1969.

"In coordination with Pastor Dean Woodruff of Webster Presbyterian Church, Webster, Texas, shortly after Apollo 11 touched down on the surface of the Moon, Buzz Aldrin partook of communion in the quiet confines of the lunar module. In a prearranged service, the congregation of the church held communion services on Earth at the Webster Presbyterian Church. The lunar communion services were coordinated with the national church headquarters and NASA officials. In order to avoid conflict of duties, the communion elements were stowed in Aldrin's Personal Preference Kit.

"I poured the wine into the chalice. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup. It was interesting to think that the very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the first food eaten there, were communion elements." - Buzz Aldrin

"Then he read the verse from John 15:5 he had printed on a card: "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me."

To enhance the display potential of the signed chalice is a beautiful framed piece, 25" x 21" overall, with a mission patch and a 13.75" x 10.75" (sight size) color photo of Aldrin facing the American flag on the moon. He has signed in silver felt tip: "The Silver Chalice/ Buzz Aldrin" (quite rare added comment). Also included with the lot are three color snapshot photos of Aldrin signing this chalice, a COA from Astronaut Central, and the above-mentioned certificate, all enclosed in a custom leather portfolio. An important grouping for those who collect items of religious significance. Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
