    Description

Apollo 10 Flown Silver Robbins Medallion, Serial Number 16, Directly from the Estate of NASA Legend Chris Kraft, with Certificate of Authenticity. This 29mm x 31mm sterling silver shield-shaped medal was one of 300 flown to the moon aboard Apollo 10, May 18-26, 1969, with crewmembers Tom Stafford, Gene Cernan, and John Young. The medallions stayed with Young aboard the Command Module Charlie Brown while Stafford and Cernan flew the Lunar Module Snoopy to within 50,000 feet of the lunar surface on a full-scale dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 landing. The obverse of the medal features the mission insignia depicting a large Roman numeral "X" on the moon with the command and lunar modules preparing to rendezvous. Earth is visible in the background. The reverse has the engraved mission dates along with the serial number and the sterling and Robbins hallmarks. A very desirable top-quality example. Certainly, a candidate for grading and encapsulation. Included with this lot is a 10" x 8" silk finish B&W reprint photo of Kraft along with Griffin, Lunney, and Windler at the flight director's console during Apollo 10.

Based on the fact that Heritage has previously sold Apollo 10 medals #18 and #19, both from the Gene Cernan collection, we feel it very possible that this one was given to Dr. Kraft by Cernan.

As mentioned above, Apollo 10 accomplished everything needed to land on the moon except for the landing itself:

"Apollo 10 made the trip home from the moon seem routine. When they splashed down only a few thousand feet from the Navy carrier-after crossing a quarter million miles of space-I lit my cigar, put my feet up on my console, and let a new feeling pass over me. 'The practice is over,' I said to nobody in particular. 'Next time we land.'" ( Flight. My Life in Mission Control by Chris Kraft, page 310, New York: Dutton, 2001).
