Apollo 10 Flown Parachute Cloth and Suspension Lines Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Command Module Pilot John Young, Certified and Signed. A 14" x 8" piece of white nylon cloth excised from one of the parachutes that aided the Apollo 10 command module's safe splashdown in the South Pacific Ocean on May 26, 1969, after an eight-day flight to the moon. On it is written "GORE 34/ RING 12", "#1", and "#2", likely in the hand of the person who originally cut apart the chute. Also included in this lot are two pieces of this parachute's suspension line- one 17" in length, the other 29". A 6" x 4" photo of Apollo 10 just before splashdown, showing the deployed parachutes, is also included. Excellent condition with storage folds. Rarely offered.

The Apollo Parachute Landing System was developed as a joint project between NASA, MSC, North American Rockwell, and Northrop Ventura. T. W. Knacke of Northrop described it in a 1968 paper as: "...probably the most advanced, most thoroughly engineered and most thoroughly tested parachute system in existence. It stabilizes and decelerates the Apollo command module after the mission is completed to a descent velocity suitable for water landing. In addition is provides, together with the Launch Escape System, the means for safely landing the Apollo crew for all mission abort cases prior to obtaining orbit..."

At the top right corner of this parachute fragment, John Young has written: "Apollo X Parachute Cloth & Attached Suspension Line. John Young".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
