The rarest of all Apollo-flown medallions.

Apollo 1 Silver-Colored Fliteline Medallion Flown on Apollo 9 by Mission Commander Jim McDivitt, Originally from the Ed White II Family Collection, with Signed COA from his Son. This 32mm medal features the mission insignia on the obverse depicting a Command/ Service Module flying over the southeastern United States. The moon is in the distance, symbolizing the program's eventual goal. The reverse has "White Grissom Chaffee Apollo 1" around; the center is typically found to be blank. This one, though, has the dates of the Apollo 9 mission engraved signifying that it did fly in space March 3-13, 1969. Original case included. Excellent condition. From the Steven R. Belasco Collection of Space Memorabilia.

A few Apollo 1 medallions were carried in Jim McDivitt's PPK aboard Apollo 9 as a favor to the families of the astronauts who died in the Apollo 1 fire. One of the Apollo 1 astronauts, Ed White II, had flown with McDivitt on the Gemini 4 mission. McDivitt carried one silver-colored medallion for each of the surviving children (and gold-colored ones for each widow). After Apollo 9 returned, the flown medallions were engraved on the reverse with the dates of the mission. This one was presented to the White family where it remained until its sale at auction in 1999.

Included with this lot is a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Edward H. White III on behalf of his father's estate stating, in full: "This document shall certify that this sterling silver Apollo 1 medallion was carried into space by James McDivitt on the Apollo 9 mission. This medallion was engraved on the reverse side with the Apollo 9 dates and then presented to my family. It has been in our possession since that time."
