    Thirty-two astronaut signatures

Alan Bean Signed Limited Edition "Reaching for the Stars" Textured Canvas Print Signed by Thirty Astronauts, #192/1500. These 27" x 34" color canvases were produced from an original acrylic by space artist and moonwalker Alan Bean in 1997 and were originally signed by twenty-four astronauts at a reunion in 1997. At various shows and private signings, six additional signers and eight additional signatures have been added. The ink signatures included on this amazing piece included are as follows. Mercury: "Alan Shepard", "John Glenn", "Scott Carpenter", and "Gordon Cooper". Gemini: "John Young", "Jim McDivitt", "Wally Schirra", "Dave Scott", "Gene Cernan", "Michael Collins" and "Richard Gordon". Apollo: "Walt Cunningham", "Frank Borman", "Rusty Schweickart", "Dave Scott", "Buzz Aldrin", "Charles Conrad Jr", "Alan Bean", "James Lovell", "Fred Haise", "Edgar Mitchell", "Al Worden", "Dave Scott", "Charlie Duke", and "Harrison H. Schmitt". Skylab: "Paul Weitz", "Owen Garriott", "Jack Lousma", "Jerry Carr", "Ed Gibson", and "Bill Pogue". Apollo-Soyuz: "Tom Stafford". These thirty-two signatures include ten of the twelve moonwalkers. The nicest of these we have encountered. Excellent.

Bean discusses this artwork: "In one sense, this is a painting of a universal astronaut, symbolizing everyone who flew in Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, and Apollo-Soyuz... I painted this astronaut, this 'star sailor', to represent the best in each of us, what we can accomplish, who we can be, if we will create the courage and determination to move in the direction of our dreams. It is up to each of us to keep reaching for our own stars and to understand that they are not light years distant but as close as our workplace, our home, and our family."

On the verso of the canvas is a printed Certificate of Authenticity from the issuing Greenwich Workshop gallery, stating in part: "It features a textured canvas surface recreating the 'moonprints' of authentic lunar boots, a core tube used to collect soil samples, and impressions from a hammer used to drive the staff of the American flag into the Moon's surface. This limited edition fine art textured canvas bears the original and authentic signatures of American space pioneers. Affixed hereto in the month of October, 1997, in support of the United States Astronauts Hall of Fame and the U.S. Astronauts Scholarship Foundation."

Included with the lot are three Certificates of Authenticity from Novaspace signed by Kim Poor for the Harrison Schmitt, John Young, and Gene Cernan signatures.
