Signed by ten moonwalkers and twelve others

Alan Bean Signed Limited Edition "In the Beginning..." Print, Signed by a Total of Twenty-Two Apollo Astronauts, #406/1000. A 26" x 30" color lithograph issued in 1994 from a 1993 acrylic painting by Bean. Around the central artwork of the celebrating astronauts on the moon are the mission insignias of all eleven manned Apollo spaceflights. At least one member of each crew has signed beneath their respective emblem, as follows. Apollo 7: "Wally Schirra" and "Walt Cunningham". Apollo 8: "Frank Borman". Apollo 9: "Jim McDivitt" and "Rusty Schweickart". Apollo 10: "Tom Stafford". Apollo 11: "Buzz Aldrin" and "Michael Collins". Apollo 12: "Charles Conrad Jr", "Richard Gordon", and "Alan Bean". Apollo 13: "James Lovell" and "Fred Haise". Apollo 14: "Alan Shepard", "Stuart Roosa" and "Edgar Mitchell". Apollo 15: "Dave Scott" and "Al Worden". Apollo 16: "John Young" and "Charlie Duke". Apollo 17: "Gene Cernan" and "Harrison H. Schmitt". Bean discusses this image: "I knew that creating a painting to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first manned lunar landing and the total Apollo program would be difficult. I wanted the image to show some of the more important things we did on the Moon and, most of all, to express the spirit of the adventure as we astronauts experienced it. But how does one show in a painting the dedication, the intensity, the self sacrifice, the sense of duty, history and patriotism that engulfed us all our quest for the Moon? I didn't know, but I began. Pete Landa, an artist friend, helped with an idea that served as the basis of the painting. Nancy Conrad, the wife of Pete Conrad, my fellow Apollo XII moonwalker thought of the title. I enjoyed creating In the Beginning in this way because that's how Apollo was done. It was not the handiwork of any one person but of 300,000 dedicated human beings working together to make an ages-old impossible dream come true... some twenty-five years, and a lot of wonderful memories, ago. Thanks, America." The signatures of moonwalkers Gene Cernan and John Young were not on the original print but were added through private signings. This represents ten of the twelve moonwalkers and eighteen of the twenty-four moonfliers. As-issued condition.

Included with this lot a Certificate of Authenticity from Greenwich Workshop, the issuing gallery for the print, and a Certificate of Authenticity from Novaspace for the Cernan signature.
