DescriptionX-Men #1 Twin Cities pedigree (Marvel, 1963) CGC Very Fine 8.0 Off-white to white pages. In the early 1960s as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby co-created one classic character after another, they always needed an explanation for the origin of the character's superpowers, and it usually involved an accident with some sort of radioactive material. The X-Men were something new: characters who were simply born with their powers. This issue had the first appearances of all of them: Professor X, the Angel, the Beast, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Cyclops, and Iceman, as well as their most famous adversary, Magneto. High-grade copies like this one have been selling for well above the "book value" listed below. Cover art by Kirby.
While a significant price realized is in the cards for these superb comics, it will never be enjoyed by the man who put the collection together, Gary Dahlberg of Minneapolis, who perished in a tragic fire last year at age 62. Dahlberg, who worked as a bus driver and had aspirations as a young man of becoming a cartoonist, had just retired a few months earlier, planning to sell his house and move further north to Duluth with his girlfriend.
On July 8, 2010, disaster struck. Dahlberg was cleaning the oven in his kitchen, when he apparently got lightheaded from the chemicals and went to lie down. The combustible mixture of cleaning agents caught fire. He died on the way to the hospital.
The entire house was charred, smoke-damaged, and ruined... except for the two front bedrooms, and that's where he kept his comic book collection. No fire or water touched a single book.
Gary's family knew that the comics were worth something, but not exactly how much. They thought that these were worth, perhaps, a few thousand dollars collectively. As it turns out, the final number on these three comics will easily exceed $50,000.
Overstreet 2010 VF 8.0 value = $8,000. CGC census 3/11: 42 in 8.0, 74 higher.
