X-Men #1 Twin Cities pedigree (Marvel, 1963) CGC Very Fine 8.0 Off-white to white pages. In the early 1960s as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby co-created one classic character after another, they always needed an explanation for the origin of the character's superpowers, and it usually involved an accident with some sort of radioactive material. The X-Men were something new: characters who were simply born with their powers. This issue had the first appearances of all of them: Professor X, the Angel, the Beast, Marvel Girl (Jean Grey), Cyclops, and Iceman, as well as their most famous adversary, Magneto. High-grade copies like this one have been selling for well above the "book value" listed below. Cover art by Kirby.

While a significant price realized is in the cards for these superb comics, it will never be enjoyed by the man who put the collection together, Gary Dahlberg of Minneapolis, who perished in a tragic fire last year at age 62. Dahlberg, who worked as a bus driver and had aspirations as a young man of becoming a cartoonist, had just retired a few months earlier, planning to sell his house and move further north to Duluth with his girlfriend.

On July 8, 2010, disaster struck. Dahlberg was cleaning the oven in his kitchen, when he apparently got lightheaded from the chemicals and went to lie down. The combustible mixture of cleaning agents caught fire. He died on the way to the hospital.

The entire house was charred, smoke-damaged, and ruined... except for the two front bedrooms, and that's where he kept his comic book collection. No fire or water touched a single book.

Gary's family knew that the comics were worth something, but not exactly how much. They thought that these were worth, perhaps, a few thousand dollars collectively. As it turns out, the final number on these three comics will easily exceed $50,000.

    Overstreet 2010 VF 8.0 value = $8,000. CGC census 3/11: 42 in 8.0, 74 higher.

This event is a special auction being conducted by Heritage Auctions for an ABC TV television pilot starring
Ty Pennington and produced by Cineflix (Auction) Inc. The auction will operate differently than a typical
    Heritage auction.

      Please take note:
    1. The auction will proceed at a significantly slower pace than a normal Heritage auction, so bidders will need to be patient and understand there may be abnormal bidding, as further indicated below.
    2. Some lots will open for bidding during the live auction at levels lower than our bidding protocol would normally dictate (i.e. the next increment over the second highest bid). In those cases our staff will place bids during the auction as proxies for the Internet high bidder, and certain absentee underbidders until the bid reaches the then current high bid at the start of the live auction. As such, if your bid is the high absentee bid, please do not bid against yourself from the floor, phone, or on Heritage Live.
    3. In all cases, the highest absentee bid wins ties over any live bid.
    4. In some cases proxies may bid up to one bid below an undisclosed reserve, but never above that amount.
    5. If a lot fails to reach a reserve, it will be recorded as a no sale, just like all Heritage auctions.
    6. All other non-conflicting terms and conditions of sale remain in full force and effect.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
