Description

William F."Doc" Carver: His Well-Used Personal Leather Boots, Autographed By the Famed Showman. A wonderful personal artifact, these circa 1880s boots were made by "Chas. P. Shipley / Kansas City, Mo.", whose name appears on the canvas bootstraps in each boot. One of the boots has been boldly autographed in black ink "Doc W. F. Carver" on the tan leather liner. They were also given to Charles Nordin by Carver, and ultimately obtained from his grandniece by Greg Martin in 1986.

Overall condition for display is good. The basic structure of the boots and the soles, heels, etc. is excellent. The leather surface has dried out, and exhibits some flaking, particularly on the lower "shoe" portion of the boots. However this effect is relatively even and consistent, and can be said to give a sense of age. Height of each boot 22.5".

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
