    Addressed to Johnson, the note reads in full: "Please Budd! Don't forget if you pick one or two let me know a week or so before recording date. So as to look up copyright. Thanks. Jeff."

    On verso stamped "Capital Attractions...Harrisburg, Pennsy." Maceo Jefferson was a member of the Plantation Orchestra, and is likely pictured in this photo.

    Jefferson started his career as a banjoist. He joined the Plantation Orchestra in 1926. In the 1930s, he toured Europe and played with jazz greats such as Arthur Briggs and Louis Armstrong. He was imprisoned for a period by the Nazi government and spent some of his time in a concentration camp in France. Jefferson was finally released in 1944 and repatriated to the U.S.

    Condition: The compositions are toned at the edges with light wear. The photograph is worn at the corners, with pinholes and soiling. There is an area of paper loss at the top center edge.
