Heavyweight Champion Jim Corbett Theatrical Poster. 30" x 40" color poster by the Strobridge Company for the play "Gentleman Jack", produced in 1894. It prominently features "The Champion of the World James J. Corbett". The poster shows a scene from the play designated "Jack's Predicament". Corbett is considered the father of modern boxing through his adoption of "scientific boxing". He attained the heavyweight championship title by defeating John L. Sullivan in New Orleans on September 7, 1892. He successfully defended his title just one time. Much of his income derived from acting in plays and appearing in silent movies. He and an opponent, John Donaldson, joined forces and toured in this play. A paper panel has been pasted to the bottom of the poster announcing a performance at the Grand Opera House in Mankato, Minnesota. There is a small piece missing at the upper right corner, some creases and chipping to the edges. It could be left as-is or easily restored for a modest sum and made to look like new.
