    Description

The Negro Soldier 16mm Film Reel.
    Film Can: 14.25" diameter
    No place; 1944

A propaganda documentary released by the United States Department End of War. Directed by Stuart Heisler, the film aimed to inspire African Americans to enlist in the United States Army and fight in the Second World War. Starring Carlton Moss, Norman Ford, and Bertha Woolford. The film is 43 minutes in length.

In 1944, The U.S. government produced what was arguably the most influential propaganda film to come out of the war, The Negro Soldier. Joe Louis, the World's Heavyweight Champion, was made the centerpiece of the film. Made to counteract the charges of racism and discrimination in the military service, it was designed to be shown to all servicemen, black and white alike, to educate them about the contributions of blacks throughout U.S. history. The film was produced by famed Frank Capra, and was written by Carlton Moss, who would later become an important figure in African-American independent cinema. In the documentary, a black preacher addresses his congregation and speaks to the accomplishments African-Americans have made both in the military as well as in sport and business. Military figures mentioned include Crispus Atticus (who was killed during the Boston Massacre), the Negro Minute Men, the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, and Robert Brooks (the first American tank member to be killed in WWII). The film was so well received that it became required-viewing at replacement centers all across the United States. In 2011, the film was preserved in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Condition: There is tape on the plastic reel casing where cracks are present. Film appears to be in good condition. The tin film can is worn, rusted, and soiled, with tape around the rim.
