    Sheet Music for the Bonnie Blue Flag. New Orleans and Montreal: Roberts & Reinhold, Lithographers. N.d. [circa 1861]. Three folio pages, 10.25" x 13.5". Following West Florida's declaration of independence from Spain, it flew the Bonnie Blue Flag (a single white star on a blue field). When Mississippi seceded from the Union on January 9, 1861, the Bonnie Blue Flag was raised over the capitol building in Jackson. An Ulster immigrant named Henry McCarthy was present, and later wrote The Bonnie Blue Flag which became a popular marching song and led to the flag being used as an unofficial flag of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. The design later served as the inspiration for the first flag of the Republic of Texas, known as the Burnet Flag. It was replaced in 1839 by the current Lone Star Flag design.

    Ye men of valor, gather round the banner of the right,
    Texas and fair Louisiana join us in the fight;
    Davis, our loved president, and Stephens statesman are,
    Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.
    Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern rights hurrah!
    Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

    Fine. Faint occasional soiling.

    We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
