Description

MOLLY PICON–QUEEN OF THE YIDDISH THEATRE..

Please note: Autographs from the Leonard Finger collection have not been autenticated by Spence/Grad but we believe these autographs to be as stated.

Star of Yiddish and English-speaking stages, motion pictures, radio and television. She wrote almost 100 songs and skits for the stage. She performed for the sick, the American troops in World War II and the sur- 163 viving Jews in Europe. She got the acting bug by winning $5 at an amateur night for children in 1903, then joined Thomashevsky’s Yiddish Stock Company the following year. She toured Europe in the early 1920s, achieving great success with her husband’s operetta "Yankele". She returned to the Yiddish theatres of Second Avenue and made two Yiddish films in Poland. She toured the American vaudeville circuit in the 1930s, as well. Her first Englishspeaking role on Broadway was in "Morning Star". She also had a radio show for nineteen years and a television show that ran briefly in 1948. Group of sixty-one publicity stills, production stills and portraits covering all periods of Picon’s career. The vast majority are 11 x 14" production stills from shows of the 1930s. There is a later portrait of Picon and Maurice Chevalier and a series of photos taken on the set of "Fiddler on the Roof". Condition varies (a small percentage of the production stills have filing holes), but there are several "runs" of photos that are totally undamaged.
