GILLETTE, William. (1853-1937) American actor who debuted in New York in 1877 in Mark Twain’s "Gilded Age". He wrote and starred in his own play, "The Professor", in 1881, followed by two crowd-pleasing plays about the Civil War. Though of little literary merit, and not well-liked by critics, Gillette's productions were financially very successful, earning him more than $4 million throughout his career. Most of his income was derived from an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes for which his manager, Charles Frohman, purchased the theatrical rights. Gillette consulted with Arthur Conan Doyle to rewrite the story, adapting it to the stage, and the resulting product opened in Buffalo in 1899 and London in 1901. The play ran, on and off, for nearly thirty years. Gillette’s final farewell tour, beginning in 1929, lasted for three years. Gillette made one film in 1913 and read excerpts from "Sherlock Holmes" on the radio from time to time. This lot includes: index card signed WM. GILLETTE BOSTON. FEB 21.’90 (slight toning), cabinet card of Gillette in "The Admirable Creighton" by Hall’s of NY, cabinet card by Sarony with background silhouetted for magazine reproduction, 8 x 10" publicity still of Gillette in "A Successful Calamity", program for Farewell Performances of five plays with Gillette produced by Charles Frohman at the Hollis Street Theatre, three real photo postcards, 11 x 17" production still of Gillette as "Sherlock Holmes" and a 19 x 11" mounted photo of the "FIRST APPEARANCE OF WILLIAM GILLETTE ON THE AIR AS SHERLOCK HOLMES FOR THE G.
