George Gershwin Check Engrossed in His Hand and Signed. 8.25" x 3" (sight), New York; January 9, 1929. Check number 562, George Gershwin pays $40.70 to the American Dramatists. With punch cancellation at center affecting only the very top of the first G in "George".

Framed together with an Ira Gershwin Typed Letter Signed, one page, 5.25" x 6.25" (sight), Beverly Hills, California; April 19, 1956. Addressed to Rex Beasley, in response to a request for autographs. Gershwin writes, in part: "Herewith are my autographed photograph for you, and an uncommon photograph of my brother. On the latter you may paste, if you like, his actual signature which can be clipped from one of his cancelled checks, also enclosed..." The typed letter and check have been matted and framed with two black and white photographs to the overall size of 17.75" x 15.75". It is unknown if one of these photographs is the one Ira Gershwin makes reference to in the letter.

Condition: The check has some toning around outer edges, with a small tear at an upper corner and a small hole along the left vertical margin. The check was torn cleanly in half and has been mounted back together; this does not affect the signature. The typed letter has some slight bleed through at the corners, likely from adhesive residue on the back where the letter was mounted. Overall, both are very fine with clear and bold signatures.

    More Information:

George and Ira Gershwin were staples in the Hollywood musical business, and they wrote and composed more than a dozen Broadway shows between the two of them. The duo are most noted for their opera Porgy and Bess, and songs such as "I Got Rhythm" and "Embraceable You".  Tragically, George Gershwin died in 1937, after it was found he had a large brain tumor. After his younger brother's death, Ira took a writing hiatus of almost three years before getting back into the business.
