DescriptionExcellent Collection of Late 1920s New York Theatre, Movie, and Music Programs. Offered here is an incredible selection of programs, playbills, and other publications from a very interesting and important period in American theatre. Let's take a look at just a few of the eighteen items included in this lot:
--The very first iteration of Chicago at The Music Box (which was managed by Sam Harris and Irving Berlin). This was only three years after the real-life court cases on which it was based. This 32 page issue of "The New York Theatre Advertising Medium" features color covers, great illustrated ads, and articles, excellent condition.
--Major Bowes' Capitol Theatre featuring live entertainment as well as a movie. It's interesting to note in this program dated January, 1927, that the Associate Conductor of the Capitol Grand Orchestra was Eugene Ormandy (in his first American job). The movie showing at the time was the now classic Flesh and the Devil starring Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. The very next week they were planning to show another legendary film, The General starring Buster Keaton. Eight pages, light original folds.
--Gilbert & Sullivan's Iolanthe at the Plymouth Theatre. A 24-page program with color covers dated 1927 along with a Libretto dated 1882 that was likely purchased at the same performance.
Other theatres represented are the Biltmore, Shubert Riviera, Guild, Mansfield, Casino, Longacre, Booth, Roxy, Broadhurst, and the Metropolitan Opera. Other plays include The Little Spitfire, The Barker, Ibsen's Ghosts, The Desert Song, An American Tragedy, and Shaw's Pygmalion. Just a few of the actors include Walter Huston, Claudette Colbert, Ruth Gordon, Beulah Bondi, and Lynne Fontanne. An outstanding grouping!
