Description

Enrico Caruso Memorial Bronze Sculpture. Thanks in large part to the Victor Talking Machine Company, Italian tenor Enrico Caruso's name became synonymous with opera. Consumers no longer needed access to La Scala or the Metropolitan Opera in order to hear a great artist perform. Records had come to stay and they were creating stars for mass consumption. Caruso's untimely death in 1921 came at the height of his fame and, as such, opened up an ephemeral market for Caruso memorabilia. This large, finely executed cast bronze sculpture is an example of such an item. Signed with a 1921 copyright on the back of its base by sculptor Tom Campajola, the piece carries a bust of the singer beneath the protective wing of a mourning angel. It includes a discreet candle holder should the bronze's owner wish to light a devotional flame now and again. An impressively large bronze with a beautifully applied dark brown patina. In excellent condition. 10.5" high x 13.5" wide x 7.5" deep.
