    Description

Captain Paul Boyton: Showman in a Rubber Suit. Paul Boyton, a.k.a. "The Fearless Frogman", was a late 19th century showman who promoted open-water swimming. He invented a rubber suit that allowed him to float on the surface, often with a dingy in tow, and travel across wide expanses of water. He crossed the English Channel in 24 hours in 1875 and that was just the beginning of his adventures. He helped organize the United States Life Saving Service, a precursor to the U. S. Coast Guard. He is credited with opening the first permanent amusement park ("Paul Boyton's Water Chutes") in Chicago in 1894 and opened Sea Lion Park on Coney Island the following year which later became Luna Park. This lot includes an undated CDV of Boyton posed in his rubber suit plus a colorful 9" x 13" letterhead for "Capt. Paul Boyton's World's Water Show" (some discoloration along left side which tends to blend in). In this letter written from London in 1894, Boyton says he cannot provide a picture of himself, but suggests his correspondent purchase his book, "The Story of Paul Boyton", for fifty cents.
