Capital Cuff Model C Mahogany Music Box.

Produced by F. G. Otto & Sons, Jersey City, New Jersey circa 1897, largest of three "Capital Self-Playing Music Box" models using conical tune barrels of sheet steel with punched projections, later called "cuffs" with 81 tooth musical comb scale similar to that of the 76 tooth Regina 15 ½" single comb disc music box, on full width patterned and gilt cast iron bedplate with safeties preventing cuff removal until end of song, in polished mahogany case with cuff storage compartment, paneled lid with fleur-de-lis and swag carving, and underlid chromolithographic print, with ten cuffs.
Protected by high import tariffs, producing disc music boxes in America promised to be a lucrative endeavor, but avoiding patent infringements required a novel innovation such as the cuff music box. After three years of limited production, Otto switched to the disc format.
According to the soon to be released, Encyclopedia of Disc Music Boxes by Q. David Bowers, "... unique, interesting, and very musical Capital cuff box is on just about every [music box] collector's wish list".
    Dimensions: 26.5" x 17 x 10" H

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
