Description

ARCHIVE OF EPHEMERA RELATED TO BERTHA KALICH, JENNIE CASHIER AND BABY EVELYN GRILL..

Please note: Autographs from the Leonard Finger collection have not been autenticated by Spence/Grad but we believe these autographs to be as stated.

This lot consists of three miniarchives or folders filled with portraits, postcards, telegrams, playbills, etc. for these three performers. It is highlighted by DEPRESSIONERA CHILD LABOR FORMS SIGNED BY MAYOR FIORELLO LAGUARDIA. Bertha Kalich was a serious dramatic actress who performed plays by Joseph Gordin while also appearing in English productions. Her material includes five programs and six portraits (some faults). Jennie and Isadore Cashier were actors in the Yiddish theatre. Her material includes thirteen portraits, snapshots and real photo postcards. Evelyn Grill was the Jewish version of Baby Rose Marie and other precocious child vaudeville stars of the 1930s (having a Jewish mother, she was quite well-fed, perhaps a little "zaftig"). Grill’s material includes a large amount of ephemera, such as scrapbook pages, child labor legal forms, programs, playbills, snapshots, two 8 x10" Autographed Portraits Signed EVELYN GRILL, three Autographed 164 Postcards Signed GUS EDWARDS and some related material, including an autographed postcard by Evelyn’s "stage mother" LUCY GERHMAN. The four legal forms are all signed by NY Mayor FIORELLA H. LaGUARDIA, are all dated 1934, and allow Evelyn Grill to perform "speaking parts only." These forms are significant in light of the child labor laws then recently enacted and the exigencies of Depression-era America. Choice stuff!

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
