Very Rare "Grenadier of Virginia" Saber C. 1778 - 1783. This rare example of the Grenadier of Virginia saber was purchased by the consignor from a "picker" in the Louisville, Ky. area some years ago. It is certainly possible this sword was one of those carried by George Rogers Clark troops in the Ohio Valley Campaign of 1782, as they were known to have received an issue of these weapons. The brass stirrup guard hilt is untouched with wonderful dark patina, just a very minor bend in the knuckle bow. The signature blade of this saber bears the pre 1783 Klingenthal inspection mark of crown over R, which is readily apparent on the flat of the blade near the hilt. Much of the fine etching on the blade has been lost over the course of its life and there is some scattered moderate pitting, although small elements of the original script motif can still be discerned at intervals along the blade faces. Good representative example of one of the rarest and most desirable of all Revolutionary War American edged weapons. 9
