Very Rare B. Douglas Confederate Mounted Staff Officer's Sword With CS In Guard And Original Brass/Copper Scabbard. 34" blade which is absolutely flat with the exception, of course of the bevel for the cutting edge in superb condition. Smooth generally gray patina with a few darker spots scattered about. Absolutely no rust, pitting or edge nicks, but exhibiting a couple of very small forging flaws. The guard, with CS and star, is nearly identical to that of the Boyle Gamble Staff sword pictured in Figs 2 -B and C in Albaugh's photosupplement with a few noteworthy but suttle differences. The knucklebow is plain with an elongated face where it attaches to the pommel cap and is not pierced for a sword knot. The pommel cap is undecorated with a delineation in the casting between the top and base of the cap. The hilt is overall perfect with deep dark untouched patina. The leather grip with heavy gauge twisted brass wire also about perfect. The scabbard is of brass with a very high copper content with the ring mounts showing a distinctly lighter brass color than the scabbard itself. Brass carrying rings and the iron throat is rather crudely soldered in place. Scabbard overall excellent with just some scattered shallow dents. Iron drag with accentuated finials on each end. A wonderful untouched example of this very scarce Confederate staff officer's sword and the first example we've seen. Ex-Steve Hess Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
