Very Nice Untouched, Marked James Conning Confederate Enlisted Cavalry Saber And Scabbard. 35 1/2" curved blade with smooth, dark untouched patina. Absolutely no rust or pitting and just a few tiny edge nicks near the tip, minor. Deeply marked on the reverse at the base of the blade "James Conning (in an arc) / Mobile". The leather washer is missing allowing for some minor looseness in the hilt. The hilt overall with very nice untouched patina. There is a small bend and a few nicks on the guard, but of minor consequence and easily restored, otherwise the hilt is about perfect. The wooden grip is perfect, retaining all but one strand of the original twisted brass wire, but only about 10% of the original oilcloth wrap at the top. Interestingly there are no numbers stamped anywhere on the sword. Retains the original heavy iron scabbard. with rather crude heavy iron throat and very heavy ring mounts and rings. Scabbard with generally smooth deep dark untouched patina overall, with just a few minor scattered areas of surface and one deep dent, resulting in a tiny crack at the edge midway between the iron drag and lower ring mount. The scabbard is the form fabricated of all iron with brazed back seam as mentioned in the description of Fig. 6-F in Albaugh's Photo Supplement. A nice totally honest and completely untouched example of this rare marked Confederate enlisted cavalry saber.
