Very Fine US Naval Officer's Straight Sword C. 1830. 31" blade decorated for half its length. Obverse with engraved decorations highlighted with gilt including floral scroll work and central motif of American shield with liberty cap on pole. Between the engraved decorations are white etched panels with arms panoply and floral/scrollwork. All decoration on fire blue background. Reverse formatted the same but with different gilt engraved decorations and white etched panels. The blade retains most of the original gilt and 60% of the fire blue. The balance a smooth light gray patina with absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks. The guard features a tucked wing American eagle perched on an anchor, with scroll work along the edges, all cast in deep relief. Knuckle bow cast with decorative scroll work with central rosette. Lion head quillon and the small upturned reverse counterguard with engraved floral decoration. The pommel is a large plumed, closed face, helmet, with decorative engraving on the sides of the base. Fluted plaque bone grips perfect. The sides of the grips with sheet brass strips decorated with scroll work, and a 1/2" sheet brass ferrule at the base with embossed oak leaves. The brass scabbard has two carrying rings at the top and is elaborately decorated with embossed/engraved leaf and scroll motifs including a 7" section at the bottom. It is plain on the reverse. A few minor dents detract nothing. A most attractive American Naval officer's sword in fine condition and an unusual form.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
