Very Fine Presentation Grade US M1872 Cavalry Officer's Saber. 33" curved blade about mint and profusely and delicately etched for over half its length. Obverse with floral/scroll work, arms panoplies, including American flag , American shield, and cavalry guidon with hand engraved US. Large US in the center intertwined with vines. The reverse displays similar decoration but with large spread wing eagle with motto beneath and surrounded by stars. Makers name, "MADE BY THE / M. C. LILLEY & Co. / COLUMBUS, O." on the ricasso. The hilt of regulation style with rays on underside of guard, deep relief cast leaf decoration on face of branches and heavy scrollwork where the knucklebow enter the pommel. The pommel of exceptional quality incorporating deep relief cast floral and scroll decoration and extending 2" down onto the grip. Tucked wing eagle with stars deeply cast on the top of the guard. Hilt retains about 95% of the original gilt along with the original gold bullion sword knot, also perfect. Dark gray sharkskin grip with brass wire wrap also mint. Nickled steel scabbard excellent with just some tiny flecks of surface rust, absolutely no dents. Superb quality brass mounts and throat. Top mount with deep relief laurel leaves cast on the ring mount surmounted by tucked wing eagle, with American shield surrounded by scrollwork beneath with 7 piercings. The middle mount exhibits the same leaf design on the ring mount with deep relief cast scroll work above and below with 16 piercings. 5 1/2" lower mount also with deep relief cast scroll and leaf work with 11 piercings. Plain scalloped edge brass drag. The same design carries over to the back side on the middle and lower mount with the reverse of the top mount being identical to the middle mount. Brass carrying rings with the actual ring mounts cast with pineapple design. All mounts about perfect retaining 98% of the original gilt.

A truly exceptional example, for both quality and condition, of this very desirable US Cavalry officer's saber of the Indian Wars period.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
