Very Fine Civil War U.S. M1860 Cavalry Officer's Saber with Inscription. As pointed out in the introduction, while a very nice Civil War period M1860 cavalry officer's saber, we are of the opinion the inscription was added post period.

Very nice saber. Blade excellent retaining much of the original luster but with an area of light, and one area of somewhat heavier, pitting near the tip, else about perfect. Obverse with scroll enclosed panel with spread wing eagle, rays and motto. Reverse with large US flanked by elaborate scrollwork. Marked on the reverse ricasso "F. Horster / Solingen". Hilt perfect with nice dark patina. Cast decorative leaf and scrollwork where branches join the guard, quillon, where guard enters the pommel and on the face of the pommel. Sharkskin grip excellent with just a couple of worn spots and nice tight wire wrap.

The plain steel scabbard is excellent with two dents, otherwise nice smooth patina with absolutely no rust or pitting. Inscribed in script on the reverse between the two ring mounts, "Presented to / Capt. A. H. Krom / by the men of Co. G / 5th N. Y. Cav." Again while beautifully done and showing nice patina we are of the opinion this inscription was added post period. Krom enlisted in the 5th new York on Oct 6, 1861 and was promoted to Major in March of 1864. Krom was wounded in the face and leg at Warrenton Junction, Va. on 3 May 1863 in action against Mosby's command. Very nice sword. Accompanied by complete set of records and photograph.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
