Very Fine Civil War Non Reg Foot Officer's Sword with Authentic ID. A very popular style as used by many officer's and often seen in period photographs. The plain 32 1/2" blade is about mint with small brass "Proved" disc inset on the obverse ricasso and W. WALSCHEID / SOLINGEN on the reverse. All iron hilt with two outward branches and pierced with a small single inboard branch. Stepped pommel with back strap with decorative fluted 1/2" iron ferrule at the base of the grip. The entire hilt is decorated with incised lines around all the edges. The grip is sharkskin showing some smooth honest wear with spring like copper wire wrap. Grip and wire about perfect. Steel scabbard excellent with smooth dark patina overall and two dents on both sides 7" and 11" from the drag, along with one small patch of light pitting between the dents. Neatly die stamped, with, accompanying dark patina and honest wear, on the back strap, "WM H. BRIGGS 1ST LIEUT. / Co. B 3RD MAINE VOL'S". Absolutely period and simply representing an efficient and effective way for Briggs to personalize his sword. Briggs joined the 3rd Maine as a sergeant on June 4, 1861, was promoted to 2nd Lt. 12/22/62 and 1st Lt. 12/18/63. He was killed in action at Cold Harbor on May 30, 1864. Nice sword with great history and absolutely period ID.
