Very Fine and Rather Scarce Civil War U.S. M1850 Foot Officer's Sword by C. Roby with Inscription. As pointed out in the introduction while this is an exceptional, completely original Civil War US M1850 foot officer's sword, we believe the inscription to be from the post Civil War period.

Near mint 32" blade with unique Roby etch. The obverse incorporates grape and floral motifs with leaves at top and bottom, arms panoply in the center with cannon and American shield, beneath which is a spread wing eagle. The reverse incorporates similar motifs but with an old English US and in the etch at the bottom of the blade "C. Roby & Co. / W. Chelmsford / Mass". Blade overall about mint with just a couple of tiny nicks, really negligible, as is a tiny chip at the tip. Regulation style hilt retaining traces of the original gilt, the light colored sharkskin grip perfect, with just some minor looseness in the brass wire wrap but 100% intact.

The scabbard is very sound with just some minor finish cracks and old expert repair to an apparent break midway between the middle and lower mounts. Plain brass mounts, marked on the back of the top mount with the Roby logo. The mounts retain traces of gilt and are near perfect with just a few tiny dents on the lower mount. The upper mount is inscribed diagonally in script "Presented to / Lieut. Charles H. Hovey / By the men / in his Command / Co. D 13th Regt MVM / Sept. 8, 1861." Again, we believe the inscription to be post Civil War. Hovey enlisted in the 13th Mass. as 1st Lt. on 7/16/61 and was promoted to Capt. 1/31/62. He was discharged for disability on 1/7/64. Accompanied by a complete set of records.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
