U.S. Model 1860 Staff and Field Officers' Sword with Inscription. As noted in the introduction while this is a fine, authentic, US M1860 Staff & Field officer's sword we are of the opinion the inscription has been added post period.

29" diamond in profile bright, plain blade with a "Wm. Read & Sons/ Boston, Mass." etched maker's mark. Regulation form, made without folding counterguard with just a rudimentary curved brass extension on the reverse. Brass wire wrapped fishskin grip. The metal scabbard is regulation in form with brass drag and two brass mounts supporting three mounting rings. On the obverse side of the scabbard between the two mounts is engraved "Maj. C. Jarvis/ 9th REG. Vt. Inf./ 1863". Again, while an authentic sword we believe this inscription to be post period. Charles Jarvis of Weathersfield, Vermont enlisted in the Union army on May 24, 1863 as a captain and was commissioned as major the same day. On June 19, 1863 he was assigned to the Field and Staff of Company D of the 9th Vermont Infantry. On December 1, 1863, he was mortally wounded while on scouting duty near New Berne, North Carolina.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
