US M1860 Staff & Field Officer's Sword With Inscription. As noted in the introduction, while this is a very fine US M1860 Staff & Field Officer's sword, we are of the opinion the inscription has been added post period.
30" blade with 1 1/2" ricasso, diamond shaped in cross section. Obverse etch includes floral/scroll work, arms panoply with large US in center, There is a small panel near the base of the blade that is engraved in script "S. H. & G. / N. Y." implying its sale by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham of New York. The reverse of the blade is etched with similar motifs with spread wing eagle in the center. The blade is overall near mint with most of the original luster. Hilt overall about perfect with spread wing eagle with flag panoplies on guard and stacked arms cast into the center of the knuckle bow. Small scroll motif where the knuckle bow enters the pommel which is decorated with scroll work and geometric motifs. Black leather and brass wire wrapped grip mint. There is a small upturned reverse counterguard which is decorated with stippling. The hilt retains most of the original gilt with an old coat of lacquer.
Nickle scabbard with brass throat and leaf decorated ring mounts. Lower brass mount with star on the drag. The scabbard is near perfect with just a few scattered spots of staining. The scabbard is inscribed in script on the obverse between the two ring mounts "Lt. H. M. Warren / Staff / 59th Mass. Vol. Inf." While nicely executed with matching patina we are of the opinion this inscription was added post period. Warren enlisted in the 50th Mass. Sept. 19, 1862, mustering out Aug. 4, 1863. He then was commissioned into the 59th Mass. on Nov. 19, 1863, wounded at the Battle of Weldon Railroad, and died Aug. 19, 1864. Accompanied by records.
