    Description

US M1840 Medical Staff Officer's Sword carried by William P. Morgan, Assistant Surgeon, 9th Maryland Inf. Regulation in every respect with the exception that the obverse langet does not carry the olde English silver MS and clearly never did. 27" double edge blade oval in cross section. Made by Horstmann Philadelphia and incorporates their log in the obverse blade etch along with arms panoply, scroll work and eagle with shield and motto. Reverse of the blade identical but without the Horstmann log. Interestingly the blade etch does not include a cadeuces. Blade generally smooth and gray with very good etc, absolutely no nicks, rust or pitting. Regulation style hilt, including eagle on face of grip, about pefect with traces of gilt. Regulation brass scabbard and mounts with brass scroll affixed at back of throat with "Horstmann/&/Sons/Makers/Philada". Scabbard and mounts about perfect with just two small dents near the bottom mount, perfect. Very nice untouched Medical Staff sword, especially desirable with this attribution.
