Unusual Form American Militia Officer's Eaglehead Straight Sword C. 1845. 29" straight blade generally smooth and gray, etched for half its length. No rust and just a few scattered spots of very light pitting towards the tip, along with a couple of tiny, really negligible nicks. Etched on both sides with scrollwork and panoplies of military trophies. A small panel at the base of the blade on the obverse engraved "W. H. Horstmann / & Son" and a similar panel on the reverse "Philadelphia". The guard which terminates near the quillon in a curl is covered with a deeply cast, finely detailed spread wing eagle with shield and clouds above. The S shaped guard with a clamshell like quillon decorated with a star with the other end having a loop for attaching the double chain guard. Long necked eaglehead with the other end of the chain attached to a loop under the beak. Reeded bone grip with nice patina and one chip at the back at the pommel. 1/2" brass ferrule at the base. Small upturned counterguard with stippled finish on the reverse. The entire hilt overall excellent. Leather scabbard having throat with decorated frog stud and 3 1/2" lower mount. There is an old repair to a break with no loss at the midway point on the scabbard, else very good with only minor flaking and a couple of wrinkles. Unusual form and nicely marked by Horstmann.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
