United States Marine Corps Musician's / Non Com Sword. Another USMC sword about which there is considerable controversy, with one school claiming it was used by Marine NCOs, with the other claiming, even more adamantly that it is, in fact the USMC M1875 Musician's sword. Either way this is a superb example. 26 1/4" blade, very short for a M1840 non com, with fuller running to within 1 1/2" of the tip. Blade is about mint, the obverse plain, while the reverse exhibits a 7 1/2" panel etched U. S. M. C. in the center flanked by beautifully executed floral / scroll work. At the base of the blade, running the length of the blade, is a 1/1/4" etched panel "Horstmann (in olde English) / - Phila. -", the only example of the use of this logo we've ever seen. Blade is overall about mint. Brass hilt of the standard M1840 non com form, the the rear counter guard turned down by the user for comfort., Else about perfect with nice smooth patina and exhibiting no inspectors' marks. Original scabbard excellent,. Also standard M1840 form with a few minor scattered dents on the brass mounts, with long frog stud at top mount. Scabbard body about perfect with just a few minor 'wrinkles'. A really exceptional example of this very rare US Marine Corps sword and the first example we've ever offered.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
