Unique Form, Superb Condition, American Eaglehead Infantry Officer's Straight Sword C. 1825. 32 1/2" straight blade decorated for 1/3 its length with fire blue and gilt highlighted engraved decorations of floral and military motifs. Fire blue ends in scroll work, with about 505% of the blue and gilt remaining. The remainder of the blade a smooth dark patina with no rust, pitting or nicks. The rather large counterguard is decorated with a unique draped shell motif incorporating beaded work and leaf and scroll motifs, the only example we've ever seen. The knucklebow decorated with scrollwork with a lionhead rosette in the center and an unusual curl where it enters the finely delineated eaglehead. Mother of pearl plaque grips with triple brass wire wrap. Each side of the grip with 3/8" wide brass strips embossed with decorative circles. 1/2" decoratively embossed ferrule at the base. Large griffin head quillon. Hilt overall about perfect retaining traces of the original silver wash. The all brass scabbard retains 30% of the original silver and is profusely decorated with scroll and oak leaf engraved decoration in 4" panels at each of the ring mounts. Frog stud with relief scroll decoration. Also a 5" panel of deeply engraved scroll and leaf decoration at the bottom of the scabbard with decorative tip. The back of the scabbard is plain. There is one small dent between the ring mounts, else about perfect with nice untouched patina overall. A very pretty eaglehead sword incorporating a number of unique details in very desirable condition.
