    Description

Unique Form American Militia Officers' Sword, Circa 1840. 31 ¾" single-edge, unadorned blade with an unstopped fuller running to approximately 9" from the tip and with another thin fuller running parallel to it. No maker's mark present. German silver hilt with unique knuckle bow in the form of a snake intertwined with oak leaves and acorns. The quillon, back strap, ferrule and pommel are engraved with floral decoration. Horn (or tortoise shell) grip panels. The sword is accompanied by a German silver scabbard with two mounts and, interestingly, a third mounting ring on the reverse between the upper mount and throat. The blade is bright with a few scattered dark areas. The scabbard has a few shallow dents near the drag. This is a distinctive sword in very good condition.
