Two Stag Handled Bowie Knives With Unusual Markings C. 1870. The first is 12 5/8" overall with 8" clipped point blade having a 4 3/4" false edge. Nicely marked on the obverse ricasso "OAKES & Co / MADRAS". We assume an East Indian agent for an English maker. Blade generally smooth and gray with just some minor scattered salt and peppering, showing signs of honest use but excellent. Rather heavy oval German silver cross guard. Plaque stag grips with nice patina fastened on both sides with five German silver pins. Grips perfect. The brown leather scabbard with basket weave design on the front and large belt loop has clearly been with it for some time but is probably not indigenous to it. Scabbard fine, the whole set completely untouched.

The other knife is 10 3/4" overall with 6 1/2" double edged spear point blade with median ridge. Marked on the obverse ricasso "STANDARD / CUTLERY Co. Blade with a few minor stains but basically mint with all the original luster. Oval German silver cross guard also perfect. Plaque stag grips fastened on both sides by three iron pins, perfect. Scabbard covered with blue Moroccan leather with gilt embossed decoration. German silver throat missing frog stud and there is no tip.
    A pair of interesting knives.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
