    Description

Victorian Era Royal Navy Officers' Sword. A beautiful example with a 29 ¾" bright, slightly curved blade which is ornately etched with floral scroll, naval vignettes, and the royal coat of arms. The reverse ricasso is marked "GILLOT & HASELL 36 Strand London" and the obverse ricasso is proofed with a six-pointed star and brass inset. The gilded-brass hilt features an impressive lion's head pommel, solid half-basket style guard and folding counter guard which locks the sword in the scabbard. The grip is covered in white fish skin and wrapped with twisted gilt wire. The leather scabbard has gilded-brass mounts which have been engraved with simple floral decoration. The blade shows modest scabbard storage wear and the hilt retains most of the original luster. The leather portion of the scabbard is crazed, otherwise this is an excellent of this impressive model.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
