Very Unusual and Rare Form Militia Officer's Straight Sword Circa 1840 with Inscription. As noted in the introduction, while this is an absolutely original, and very scarce form of US militia staff officer's sword, however, we are of the opinion the inscription was added post period.

28 1/2" straight blade, ovoid in cross section and etched for 2/3 its length. The obverse features extensive floral and scroll work with arms panoplies and a tucked wing American eagle with engraved motto in riband above. The reverse features similar work with the central theme of an arms panoply with liberty cap. The lobe shaped guard with large five pointed star in a circle in each corner and finely detailed arms panoply in the center. Knuckle bow with cast decorative leaf and scroll designs and the pommel in a unique form with cast decorative scroll work. Mother of pearl plaque grips perfect, with what appears to be silver wire wrap, possibly replaced. There is a decorative 1/4" German silver ferrule at the base. The plane brass scabbard with the frog stud, displaying cast decoration, bears the following inscription engraved in script "to Capt. Benjamin L. Higgins / 86th N. Y. Vols / Aug 2, 1863 from the Firemen of Syracuse" We are of the firm opinion the inscription is, in fact, post period. Still a most attractive sword and a very scarce form. Accompanied by a complete set of records.
