Very Rare US Navy Surgeon's Sword C. 1830. One of Only A Handful Of Examples We've Ever Seen. Sadly this example exhibits some condition problems but certainly one of the rarer U. S. Naval Swords extant. 27 3/4" slender straight blade with fuller running open to the tip. Decorated with fire blue and gilt highlighted engraved floral and military motifs. Marked "Warranted" on the obverse ricasso. Blade generally smooth with just some very light scattered surface rust and retaining 30% of the original fire blue and gilt with just some very minor scattered shallow edge nicks. Brass hilt with plain reverse P guard with ball quillon and slotted for a sword knot. Pommel decorated around the pean with deep relief scrollwork, with the entire backstrap decorated with very deep relief laurel leaves and berries. Langets on both sides decorated with very fine quality relief fouled anchor surrounded by laurel leaf wreath and surrounded by rope border. Virtually identical to that shown on the sword in Fig. 122 in Peterson. The hilt retains 80% of the original gold wash. The grip is covered with sharkskin with triple, including spring like, wire wrap. Remarkably the grip is perfect with the exception of the extreme top, above the top strand of wire wrap, where it is apparently broken and the piece missing as the area has been nicely filled in with gray putty. An obvious and prominent flaw that needs to be properly restored. There is a 3/8" decoratively embossed ferrule at the base of the grip. A very rare sword deserving of careful restoration
