    Description

Very Nice Plumed Helmet Pommel US Militia Officer's Straight Sword C. 1830. 32" straight blade with engraved military/floral motifs and retaining much of the original fire blue and gilt, the balance a smooth dark patina. Some very light old scattered spots of surface rust, minor, but absolutely no nicks or pitting. All brass hilt with large counter guard featuring a ship, seated liberty, anchor and eagle. Elaborate cast decoration on knuckle bow with central motif of a five pointed star, the pommel being a plumed helmeted bust of a male figure. Turned down quillon with floral motif and shell like motif on the small turned up reverse counter guard. Mother of pearl plaque grips with one small chip at the top on obverse, else about perfect. We believe the narrow gauge wire wrap to be replaced. The brass scabbard profusely decorated with engraved/embossed floral and geometric motifs on the face, retaining traces of the original gilt, plain on the reverse. Two carrying rings and frog stud. There are a few very minor dents and two small solder repairs, apparently to an open seam, and the throat has been soldered into place, all of which should be properly restored at which point they will be virtually undetectable. A very nice sword, and a scarce form, just requiring some minor restoration.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
