Very Nice Civil War US M1850 Foot Officer's Sword. 31 1/2" blade excellent, near mint, retaining most of the original luster and just some minor scattered staining. Absolutely no rust, pitting or nicks. Obverse with extensive etch for 2/3 its length including floral/scrollwork, arms panoplies including US shield, and spread wing eagle with etched motto above. The reverse bears similar motifs but including an American flag and large US in the center. Marked "E. HORSTER / SOLINGEN" on the reverse ricasso. The blade retains the original red wool washer. Regulation hilt perfect and completely untouched, retaining much of the original gilt and the original gold bullion sword knot. Sharkskin grip with brass wire wrap also perfect. The scabbard with three plain brass mounts, about perfect with no dents and retaining much of the original gilt. The scabbard body, while very sound has lost most of the original finish now leaving it with the appearance of black buff, easily restored. An exceptionally nice untouched sword.

From the estate of Houston collector Brent Burg.
