    Description

Very Fine US Eaglehead Infantry Or Naval Officer's Eaglehead Straight Sword C. 1830. The 30" white etched blade is about mint. Obverse with floral/scrollwork and arms panoply, including liberty cap and stars. The reverse with similar etching but the central theme of a tucked wing eagle with a snake and riband above, hand engraved with "E Pluribus Unum". The blade is unmarked. All brass hilt with large lobe guard displaying in deep relief a ship, seated liberty, anchor and eagle with shield on its breast. Knucklebow with deep relief cast decoration. Very nice rather slender open beak eaglehead, commensurate with the proportions of the rest of the sword. Mother of pearl plaque grips about perfect. Grip with sheet brass side straps and 1/2" ferrule at base all with embossed scrollwork decoration. Turned down quillon and small upturned counterguard on reverse, both with cast decoration. All brass scabbard very fine although missing throat. Ring mount areas and lower 5" with profuse embossed/engraved scroll work decoration. The back of the scabbard is plain. Two carrying rings, frog stud with cast decoration. A few very minor dents near the bottom and one slightly more noteworthy dent, on both sides, 9" from the tip, all easily removed. The scabbard retains traces of the original silver wash leading to our identification of the sword as being either Naval or Infantry. A very popular form and a very nice example.
