Very Fine Civil War U.S. M1850 Foot Officer's Sword with Inscription. As noted in the introduction, while a very fine, absolutely authentic, Civil War period sword, we are of the opinion the inscription is post period.

Regulation US M1850 foot officer's sword, the 32" blade about mint and marked W. Clauberg on the reverse ricasso. Blade etch very intricate and delicate, including extensive scroll work and geometric designs with spread wing eagle and arms panoply with US shield at the base on the obverse. Reverse with similar pattern with large delicate script US and arms panoply at the base with American flag and liberty cap. Marked "IRON PROOF" on the back of the blade. The regulation style hilt is about perfect retaining some of the original gilt. Sharkskin and wire wrapped grip also about perfect, just showing minor smooth wear.

Leather scabbard very sound with just some crackling and minor flaking on the finish, plain brass mounts, about perfect retaining traces of gilt. The top mount is inscribed diagonally in block letters with the following, "PRESENTED TO / CAPT. JOHN G. HOVEY / BY THE NON COM. OFFICERS / OF / CO E 13th REG MASS. VOL / FEB 19, 1862". Again, we believe this inscription was applied post Civil War. Hovey enlisted in the 13th Mass. as a 1st Lt. on 7/16/61, was promoted to Capt. 1/31/62 and discharged for disability 9/7/64. Accompanied by a complete set of records.
