    Description

Very Fine Civil War Non Regulation Staff Officer's Sword with Inscription. As noted in the introduction, although an exceptional condition, completely original, Civil War period example of this very popular non-reg officer's sword, we are of the opinion the inscription is post Civil War period.

32 1/2" blade mint. Etched panel on obverse with large spread wing eagle surrounded by rays and similar panel on reverse with large US flanked by scrollwork. Marked "IRON PROOF" on the back of the blade. Retains the original red wool washer. Cut steel basket type guard pierced with large spread wing eagle over US with riband containing motto above. Scroll type quillon. Guard slotted for sword knot where it enters the pommel. Stepped pommel with capstan and full backstrap. Sharskin grip about perfect as is the wire wrap. Scabbard also very fine with light gray patina. Just a couple of minor dents just above the drag. Original stepped throat. The sword is inscribed in script on the scabbard between the ring mounts "Presented / to / Maj. S. B. Spooner / Feb 1863 / 46th Reg Ms. Inf". Again, although beautifully executed, we believe the inscription to be post Civil War period. Samuel Brigham Spooner enlisted as a Captain in the 46th Mass. Inf. on 9/25/62 and was promoted to Major on 2/5/63. He mustered out 7/29/63. With his promotion to Major he was transferred to the field and staff of the regiment. Really a stunning sword.
