    Description

U.S. Model 1852 Naval Officers' Sword Donated to the Navy Relief Fund Auction by Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy With Accompanying Signed Auction Card. The Navy Relief Fund auctions were and continue to be a source of fund raising to help sailors and Marines with financial assistance both at home and abroad. Many celebrated WWII leaders donated uniforms and other personal effects to help the Relief society raise funds. Admiral Leahy's donation is a standard Model 1852 U.S. Naval Officers' sword with a bright "Hermann / Cohn / N.Y." marked blade which is etched with floral scroll, anchors and other military vignettes. The gilded-brass hilt lacks some of the original luster but is complete and in excellent condition. The sword is complete with gold bullion sword knot and leather scabbard with brass mounts. The throat mount is engraved "William D. Leahy" on the reverse side. The sword is accompanied by a 3" x 5" note card which contains the Navy Relief Auction information and has been boldly signed "William D. Leahy".
