    Description

US 'Indian Princess' Militia Officer's Sword With Inscription. While a fine, original period example of this desirable form of American militia officer's sword, we are of the opinion that the inscription is post period.
32" straight blade generally smooth and gray retaining traces of the original gilt on the floral and arms panoply engraved decoration. Guard with spread wing eagle with shield with rays, stars and clouds above, terminates in curls with oak leaf and acorn decoration. Mother of pearl plaque grips about perfect with wire wrap. The knuckle bow decorated with cast scroll and floral decoration and the guard terminating in an eaglehead. Classic 'Indian Princess' pommel. There are plain brass bands on either side of the grip and a 1/2" ferrule at the base embossed with leaves.
Brass scabbard retains traces of silver wash and is profusely decorated with embossed and engraved scroll and floral decoration for its length with extensive work around the ring mounts, at the midway point on the scabbard, and an 8 1/2" section on the bottom of the scabbard. Two carrying rings and decorated frog stud. Scabbard overall excellent with just a couple of very minor shallow dents. There is no throat. Inscribed in script between the ring mounts, "Presented to / Col. Wm. M. Brown / First Light Inf. / 1847". As previously noted while the sword is a genuine period piece we believe the inscription to have been added later. We have no information on Col. Brown. Very nice example of this desirable form of American militia officer's sword.
