Unusual Form Late 18th Century American Horseman's Saber. 34 1/2-inch slightly curved blade with 3 fullers each 1/4-inch wide. Ricasso with consignor's mark 4/JKL in white. three-bar brass guard with integral knucklebow and pommel and spiral hardwood grip. Crudely scratched "BS" in top and bottom of guard. Contained in brown leather scabbard with brass frog and belt stud. Very nice untouched condition, the blade with gray patina and some scattered light pitting, with a few minor nicks. One minor dent and some scratches on the guard, which is unique in our experience. Grip with longitudinal hairline with no loss and nice patina. Scabbard very dry but sound, with finish crackling and some flaking, the tip is missing. A very unusual form clearly dating from the period 1775 - 1790, in desirable untouched condition.
