    Description

Unusual Form Civil War US M1850 Foot Officer's Sword Inscribed To Capt. David T. Davidson 94th Ohio Vol. Inf. 31" blade about mint, just some very minor stains along the edge near the tip else perfect. Etched for 2/3 its length with a pattern we have not previously encountered. Obverse with arms and flag panoplies, scrollwork and central motif of diving spread winged eagle with riband in its beak with hand engraved motto and holding lightning bolts. Reverse with very similar arms and flags panoplies and scroll work with central motif of large script intertwined US. Marked on the ricasso W. Clauberg Solingen with knight motif. All etching is of truly superior quality and all is highlighted with hand engraving. Beautiful blade. Blade retains the original leather washer. Regulation hilt retains 30% of the original gilt, the balance a deep mellow patina. The sharkskin covered grip, which is slightly larger than normally encountered, utilizes a double strand twisted wire wrap and is mint. The scabbard is unusual in that it is iron covered with leather. Inscribed on the top mount in very delicate script engraving "Capt. / D. T. Davidson / Co. H / 94th Regt. OVI". Absolutely original and of the period and all three brass mounts in about perfect condition with dark untouched patina, no dents and traces of the original gilt. The lower mount terminates in a point at the top and is decorated along the edge with ric rac engraving. There is crackling of the finish but just a few tiny spots of flaking. The lower section between the middle and lower mount is very sound with all back stitching intact. The upper portion between the throat and middle mount is fine on the front but the stitching is open on the back and there is a small tear near the bottom and one small chip missing at the top, easily restored. One of only a handful of scabbards we've ever seen utilizing this form of construction.
During Davidson's term of service with the regiment they were engaged at Perryville, Stone's River and Chickamauga. Accompanied by a complete set of Davidson's records as well as a copy of the scarce regimental history. The 94th Ohio lost 54 men killed and mortally wounded during their term of service. A fascinating, absolutely untouched, inscribed Civil War foot officer's sword with an excellent history and exhibiting several details we have not previously encountered.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
