Superb Untouched Condition US M1850 Foot Officer's Sword Inscribed to Capt. Samuel Glasson 8th Connecticut Vol. Inf. Glasson enlisted with the 8th Conn. on Sept. 25, 1861 and served with the regiment until July 21, 1862, being promoted to Captain on March 2, 1862. During Glasson's service the regiment was engaged at Roanoke Island, New Berne, N. C. and Ft. Macon, all actions which are inscribed on Glasson's sword. The sword is in wonderful untouched containing retaining 50% of the original gilt under the coating of untouched patina. The 30" blade is etched for 2/3 its length and about mint retaining most of the original luster. There is a tiny spot of salt and peppering at the tip and two small, shallow edge nicks. Scrollwork, army panoply and spread wing American eagle on the obverse with small panel at the base delicately hand engraved "Collins & Co. / Hartford / Ct." and dated 1861 on the ricasso. The reverse with similar etching and marked on the ricasso "Collins & Co. / Hartford / Conan." The hilt of regulation form and absolutely perfect retaining 70% of the original gold wash missing with untouched patina. The sharkskin grip with twisted brass wire also perfect. The scabbard is really excellent, exhibiting just some very minor surface cracking to the finish but very sound with not a hint of flaking and the backstitched seam perfect. Inscribed in stylized block letters on the face of the top mount "Capt. S. Glasson / 8th Conn. Vol." and below the ring mount "Roanoke Isd / Newbern / Fort Macon" with the battles separated by line engraving. All three brass mounts perfect, untouched with much of the original gold wash mixing with dark patina. The scabbard is marked on the reverse of the top mount with a die stamp "Collins & Co. / Hartford / Conn.". A really wonderful Civil War presentation sword in absolutely ideal exceptionally fine untouched condition.
