    Description

Superb Condition Named US M1872 Cavalry Officer's Saber By Ridabock & Co., N. Y. C. 1885. 33 1/2" curved blade absolutely mint etched for 2/3 its length. Obverse with scroll work, American shield, large old English U. S. in the center crossed American flags and maker's logo "Ridabock / & Co. New York". Reverse with name "Henry Chauncey Jr." in large old English letters in the center, flanked by extensive scrollwork with an eagle perched on a cannon at the bottom. Although we have no records on Chauncey certainly worthy of research. The blade retains the original leather washer. The hilt is also about mint with just one tiny bend on the outward leaf decorated branch where it joins the guard, minor. Both the inner and outer faces of the branches are decorated. The quillon features a deeply cast and finely detailed tucked wing eagle perched on arrows and olive branch, with the back portion of the guard decorated with 13 five pointed stars, with rays extending from the base of the grip. Scrollwork where the knucklebow enters the pommel. The pommel decorated with American shield and laurel wreath on front and cast leaves on top. Rays on the underside of the guard. The guard appears to retain 100% of the original gold wash. Sharkskin grip with twisted brass wire also perfect. The nickeled scabbard also mint with all brass mounts including throat, ring mounts with leaf and berry decoration, drag with laurel wreath with floral rosette in center. An absolutely stunning M1872 saber with potential historical significance based on the ID of Mr. Chauncey.
